boycott fox news

FOX's extreme rhetoric inspired Byron Williams' mass-murder plot.

Take action to reduce the dangerous influence of FOX News.

Hear Byron Williams' own words about Glenn Beck and FOX news.

Watch the video and sign the CREDO and Color of Change petition to Turn Off FOX on public TVs in your neighborhood.

Dear Friend,

If you've ever seen Glenn Beck's show, you know how paranoid, misleading and hateful his rants can be. But it's even worse than that.

The extreme rhetoric espoused by Beck and others on FOX News is scary because it's easy to see how this rhetoric could inspire violent acts against progressives. Unfortunately, a new report makes clear that's exactly what happened in at least one near-tragic case.1

Three months ago, a heavily armed man named Byron Williams was on his way to kill people at two non-profit organizations in San Francisco when he got into a gun battle with police. Luckily, they arrested him before he could carry out his plot. Now, in an interview from jail, the "progressive hunter" has revealed that in fact Fox News' Glenn Beck was a major inspiration:

"Beck will never say anything about a conspiracy, will never advocate violence ... But he'll give you every ounce of evidence that you could possibly need."2

Byron Williams is just one example of the very real and growing danger of political violence from the far-right — and FOX's continued promotion of hatemongers like Glenn Beck only fans the flames.

That's why we've partnered with Color of Change to launch a campaign to reduce FOX's poisonous, dangerous influence on our nation. More than 200,000 people have signed the petition asking businesses and public places to stop playing FOX News. Will you add your voice?

Watch the video and sign the petition to Turn Off FOX on public TV's in your neighborhood.

This story is personal. Byron Williams came frighteningly close to killing our friends at the offices of the Tides Foundation and the ACLU — which is less than one block from CREDO.

While many Americans are aware of the ACLU, the Tides Foundation is an organization that most people had never heard of — until Glenn Beck started demonizing and spreading false information about them. Since Beck's show premiered, he has pushed conspiracy theories involving Tides on nearly 30 episodes. During the same time period, Tides was never mentioned on other news channels.3,4

According to the interview with Williams just released by Media Matters, he was driven by a bizarre and false conspiracy theory involving the Tides Foundation that Glenn Beck pushed multiple times on his television show.5

It's stunningly irresponsible for FOX to continue legitimizing this baseless and incendiary nonsense under their "news" banner. Will you join us in asking businesses to Turn Off FOX on their TVs, and stop promoting this dangerous rhetoric in our communities?

Watch the video and ask local businesses to Turn Off FOX's dangerous rhetoric.

Williams is the clearest example we have of someone who was motivated by FOX News to engage in political violence — but he's part of a consistent pattern of violence from far-right extremists that underscores the danger of the hateful rhetoric and misinformation that's commonplace on FOX News and the right-wing noise machine.6,7

Beck's program in particular is so extreme that 296 organizations have asked FOX to pull their advertisements from his show. (Beck's show is known as "empty calories" because it draws few advertising dollars but substantial ratings.)8 Yet despite this significant pressure from advertisers, and clear evidence that FOX News broadcasts have lead to real-world violence, FOX continues promoting hate and fear, packaged as news.

This rhetoric is amplified every time it's played on a TV in a bar, restaurant or other public business. We can send a strong message to FOX, and reduce the reach of FOX's dangerous messaging, by encouraging businesses near us to turn it off.

Thankfully, police were able to stop Byron Williams before he committed a massacre. But it can happen again — let's do everything we can to stop it.

Thanks,

Elijah Zarlin, Campaign Manager

Linda Blair Worldheart Foundation

LBWF is a non- profit, 501c3 tax deductible organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating abused, neglected, and abandon animals from the harsh streets of the Los Angeles area, as well as from the overcrowded and overwhelmed city and county animal shelters.

Our Story

The foundation consists of Linda Blair, award-winning actress, humanitarian, and recipient of the coveted Los Angeles Proclamation, dedicated friends, supporters, and many wonderful volunteers.

As a child, Ms. Blair was taught to respect all animal life, and had aspirations of becoming a veterinarian. As an adult and public figure, she has chosen to shed light on the crisis in America that we call animal cruelty. Ms. Blair realized this task was bigger than her lone efforts and felt it necessary to ask for help by becoming The Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation, a 501c3 California non-profit organization.

The Wealthy People in the World Understand and Use the Law of Attraction in their Daily Lives.

The millionaires understand that abundance is there for the taking. It is not a win-lose situation – there is enough for everyone. We can all be rich.

A letter 2 Sarah P

Dear Sarah Palin,

I don't share your politics but I do share your country. I am writing
to you now as a fellow American and also as a woman who, like you,
puts my spiritual journey above all else.

When your book first came out, I knew I had to read it because I felt
judgment in my heart that was not in keeping with my religious
convictions. I was tempted to think about you in prejudiced
stereotypes, and I know that this doesn't jive with "Love one another"
or "Judge not lest ye be judged." So I bought your book.

And I liked it. I admire you as a self-made woman who has achieved a
lot in your life, and I can see how some unfair criticisms that have
been leveled against you could have hurt terribly. I am sorry for
that. As a woman from Texas, I recognized your refusal to "sit down
and shut up" as the attitude of a kick-ass woman from a kick-ass
state. Although I am pro-choice, I felt your spiritual process
regarding coming to acceptance and obedience in relation to giving
birth to a Down Syndrome child was both inspiring and profound.

When I read your descriptions of liberals in the book -- not just
critical, but simply false -- my jaw did drop a couple of times, like
I almost thought you must be joking... you couldn't really think that.
But I knew my job in reading the book was to beware my own judgments,
so I simply read on and tried to ignore your jibes.

I have defended you since reading the book, particularly when others
would make fun of your comments about looking to God's Will to guide
you. But something is happening now that is so critical to this
country, with such genuinely significant repercussions, that I implore
you to hear me -- not just as a fellow American, but as a sister who I
know prays to the same God that I do: Words have power. Please modify
your words.

In my lifetime, we have lost a President, a Civil Rights leader and a
Presidential candidate -- all to gun violence. Another President was
shot and survived the ordeal, while his press secretary was paralyzed
for life. These are not left-right issues; they are not political
correctness issues; they are human issues concerning life and death. I
am not suggesting you would pick up a gun and shoot anyone; I am
suggesting that there are other people who would, however, and in your
position as a leading political figure you are stoking fires --
regardless of your intention -- that are simply too dangerous to be
safely stoked.

This is not the stuff of media bias. It is the stuff of history -- in
the United States and elsewhere. From Hitler's Germany to the arousal
of genocidal fervor in Rwanda, there are more than enough examples of
how a group psychosis can emerge within a nation. I beg you to join
with me -- even though I am not your political ally -- in praying for
blessing and protection on all our politicians and their families, and
looking deeply within our own hearts for where violence lurks so we
can cast it out.

I am speaking from genuine concern for our country -- a concern no
more or less meaningful or legal or freedom-loving than your own. I
have a pretty tough edge myself, and I don't mince words when it comes
to politics. But no one needs to be "re-loading" now, and our
political opponents are not "enemy territory." In a free society, we
do not have to agree; in fact, that's the point of freedom. "Shoot
with accuracy; aim high and remember it takes blood, sweat and tears
to win" is a frightening statement, Sarah. It is not funny; it is
threatening. There are some crazy people in this country on both sides
of the political aisle, and saying such things could incite them to
violence that is very real.

Please join with me in turning to a God of Love and not fear, that our
country and our world -- and perhaps most importantly, our own hearts
-- might be purified of hate. It is love and love alone that will heal
our country and heal our world.
